We Have A Champion! It's Jim. It's Always Jim. Was That A Spoiler?

“She said ‘Good night’ and walked away
And I didn’t know what to say
I just couldn’t believe it”
                --The White Stripes

Now that it is all over my notes for the finale seem pretty unnecessary, besides when you get right down to it what is there left to say that I haven’t already said?  So I'm just tossing those suckers out and instead let’s start with the Final Standings for season 3 of the TSAVFL:

Standings
Points
Hummingbird Lightfoot
52
Debbie Eaglesong
50
Sizzle & Fizzle
45
Barry and the Ladies
34
Karaoke SongBookWorms
33
Fluffy Koalababy
31
Champion Bull
20
Walla Walla Whoopemup
13

Congratulations to Hummingbird Lightfoot for a solid win, that’s two out of three years!  Debbie Eaglesong made it close at the end with her third straight year of picking the actual winner, now if she can manage to get some other people into the top 10 WHO KNOWS WHAT COULD HAPPEN!  Sizzle & Fizzle stayed pretty hot as it turns out, grabbing third spot.  I feel very good about the tight three team group in the middle and expectations will be rising for them next season.  It is worth noting that all four of the finalists received at least 21 points, meaning that any one of the four outscored my and Tim’s entire teams.  Next year!   I also am determined to not have such a stupid team name next time.

We will present the TSAVFL trophy to Jim soon and post pictures of the ceremony.

Really you guys, I don’t have much other than that.  I may have a love-hate relationship with the show itself but it’s nothing but hearts, rainbows and magic unicorns for y’all and as ever I’ve enjoyed all your comments and discussions, but MAN am I looking forward to not writing anything for awhile.  Hope you had some fun and that we can do it all again later this fall.

Finale Guesses

We never watch the show on the correct night but we did last night.  I assumed it was because Debbie wanted to vote but did not have confirmation of that until she went and got her phone just before Sawyer's last song.

So I had hoped to write up my notes from last night before the winner was announced but that isn't going to happen.

So put your guesses here!

My guess, in order:

1) Sawyer
2) Meghan
3) Koryn
4) Joshua

Though apparently Josh did pretty well on iTunes, one more data point cementing my being completely out of touch with my fellow Americans.

The Finalists are Set

“Well I can’t help but wonder at this time next year,
Will we be drinking Dom Perignon or reheated beer?”
                --The White Stripes

Nate Reuss is back with a song so generic they have to put the name of it in lights behind him to let people know exactly what it is called (it didn’t work if I am any measure because I’ve completely forgotten it already).  Deb’s only comment was “is that his mom’s jacket?”

There are few The Voice moments more hilariously awkward than the home visits, and my god what a difference between the various trips!  Abbeville Louisana goes all out for Koryn, her high school is genuinely excited for her, she gets one of three keys to the cities that were given away.  Sawyer goes home to Fultonville New York, also gets a key and has a parade at the Fonda Speedway where it appears that every fourteen year old girl in town is there to see him.  This is a perfect test case of how powerful the tween voting bloc is though we know he is getting plenty of mom (and Deb) votes also.  Meghan’s welcoming party is at home with her dogs and then somehow Naomi Judd totters in like Liza Minelli in Arrested Development and later Meghan puts on a show at her old club.  India is greeted by her acapella group, who have all pitched in to get her an actual replica UCLA jersey, so they went all out.  But India then got the last laugh jumping on a plane in order to claim BOTH NYC & LA home, which you would think might give her a bigger vote advantage than say Joshua and Travers City Michigan – though say what you will, Travers City also broke out the key to the city and apparently every grade schooler and senior citizen in the area.  Let’s rank the home visit enthusiasm because that is exactly what we do here at the ol’ TSAVFL:

    1)      Koryn
    2)      Sawyer
    3)      Joshua
    4)      Meghan
    5)      India.  Poor India.  I just looked it up and I can get a replica UCLA basketball jersey for $65.

It has taken years and was not even a question I knew I had but just last night I finally figured out exactly Randy Jackson was talking about all that time when he would say “it was just ‘aight for me dog, but you did your thing so good job.”  It is not necessary to mention who I thought this about.

The lovely Deb now believes that my Adam bias has gotten to the point where it colors everything he does.  She thought this after I mentioned what a stupid pick he made giving Joshua that Bonnie Raitt song.  It’s a good song but it is exactly what he’s been doing for the past month and as has so often been the case it mainly made me want to hear the original.  But then he got to pick his own song, Masterpiece, and it was instantly the best thing he’s done since Budapest.  I really liked that performance.

We were at polar opposites on Koryn’s two songs.  Though I hadn’t ever thought of One as having any sort of social justice meaning (I just heard it as a love song though again Deb disagrees), I thought she killed it and even got the tunnel o’lights to walk through as she sung.  Deb hated it.  On the other hand, though I am ignorant of the technical term here, what distracts me about Koryn is that she will turn on what I can only describe as a vocal strobe light with her notes vibrating annoyingly.  It starts to sound like a bleat to me and as a result her second song really did not work for me at all.  Deb loved it.  We’re usually more on the same page with these things so that was interesting.

Deb wondered aloud about how and when Meghan became the best female singer in the competition.  That first song by Sam Smith looked like the beginning of a Bonnie Tyler video and was solid but I was more interested in her cover of George Jones’ Tennessee Whiskey, because it got me thinking about how and where she fits as a performer.  Country and western music comes from the blues but the connection these days isn’t all that apparent.  She doesn’t like to sing “country” but rather more R&B/soul.  Is there an opening for an Amy Winehouse type in the country world?  That seems to be the sort of niche she could fill.  I wonder if one of the reasons she bugs me is that of all the contestants, she is the one who seems to want/need it the most – but that isn’t a reason to not like someone, hell, I’m as competitive as anyone.  Deb asked me if now that I know she loves dogs does that change my feelings about her?  I don’t know.  Those looked like asshole dogs.

I missed the name of India’s second song, but I liked it and the performance even though once again, it was dramatic but emotionally flat for me.  I’m sorry she had to leave but I think she went as far as she could.  Still see her as someone whose future is on the stage and there’s plenty of career to be made there.

I also missed the name of Sawyer’s second song but I liked his first one far better.  For the record, Deb hated his dancers this week as well.  That second round in general was a strong one.  This has turned out to be a good year.

My rankings:
First song
Second song
Koryn
Joshua
Sawyer
Meghan
Meghan
India
Joshua
Sawyer
India
Koryn

A round of applause for Hummingbird Lightfoot, who will be the TSAVFL Champion for this year with a seven point lead heading into the finals!  Congratulations are also in order to our two teams still in a dogfight for second place, Debbie Eaglesong and Sizzle & Fizzle.  I remind you all, if Sawyer wins this thing and Debbie still ends up in second after picking the actual winner again you are all going to hear from her.  Barring a Koryn Hawthorne win Barry and the Ladies will eke out fourth place over KaraokeSongBookWorms, who got a big 8 points in the bonus picks to jump over Fluffy Koalababy who can still snag 4th with the aforementioned Koryn win.  Out of respect we shall not speak of Champion Bull or Walla Walla Whoopemup.

As always, I love each and every one of you.

Oh So NOW It's The Top Five Is It???

“The boat yeah you know she’s rockin’ it
And the truth well ya know there’s no stoppin’ it”
                --The White Stripes

I’m having trouble writing this today.  First things first, Jim brought up to me the fact that now that there IS actually a top 5, does that mean that the points and bonus points for what I thought were going to be the top 6 last week revert back to the original point scheme?   My initial response to Jim was ‘oh fuck I hadn’t even thought of that’, and so then I was pondering that and using that to procrastinate on actually putting this recap together.  In the end the ruling is easy – of course we revert back to the original rules.  The practical effect of this is a couple extra points for everyone with singers in the top 5 and a couple points deducted from Barry and the Ladies which doesn’t really matter in the long run with his last singer gone (except in what I’m sure is the Ed vs Gina home competition they must have going).   Ed, you should totally thank Jim for the three point loss.

Six of the eight of us had India Carney as one of our three finalist bonus picks and she remains super nice so it is weird to me that she has taken the role of The One I Really Can’t Wait To See Go.  It isn’t her fault that she doesn’t show a lot of emotion as a performer but to be honest I don’t know if she even realizes it because it looks like she confuses technique with feeling.  I think she has the best voice in the competition.  I do not know proper singing technique but in my lay opinion she is close to impeccable in her vocal ability.  But without the emotion of a song it is just proficient instead of compelling.  She comes off as the opposite of a diva and while that can be refreshing it also points out that a diva-ish attitude is also one that feels things and maybe a barometer of what makes a compelling performer.

But what the fuck do I know because India is here and Kimberly is gone.

Jim and I were chatting over email last week and in reference to my rant last week about songs that get sung season after season we traded a couple videos of songs we’d like to see, that in itself is not important but I called it out in my notes when Kimberly was going to sing Dirty Diana because DAMN I WAS EXCITED TO HEAR THAT and boy I loved her version of it and was super excited to tell you all THAT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT.  I loved everything about it and it was my favorite performance of the night and then she went home for it.   I didn’t love her choice of Free Fallin’ but I had her in my top three in both rounds.  I know nothing but I will miss her.

Might as well put my rankings down:

First Song
Second Song
Meghan – Steamroller Blues
Kimberly – Dirty Diana
Sawyer – Shine On
Meghan – Amazing Grace
Kimberly – Free Fallin’
Sawyer – Take Me to the River
Koryn – Everybody Hurts
Joshua – In My Life
Joshua -- Desire
Koryn – Dream On
India -- Glory
India – Lay Me Down

I have yet to find anything about Meghan that I would consider likable and even her appearance with her mom didn’t help because I didn’t find her mom very likable either.  Nevertheless I’ve become a big fan of her singing.  James Taylor wrote that first song?  Never would have guessed that, I should probably go listen to his version but I don’t know that I care that much.  Deb thought her first outfit was the best one they’ve had her in all year.

Deb was nowhere near as happy with Sawyer’s backup dancers, as a matter of fact her exact quote was “Oh my fucking god these dancers are a travesty!!”   He’s still my pick to win it all.  The way he phrases his lyrics is fascinating to me.

I root for Koryn but I think she hit her peak a couple weeks ago and that her inexperience is showing more as the season progresses.  I was also trying to figure out whether her mom was a pushy backstage type or super supporting and lean towards the latter but you could probably talk me into the former if you were mean enough to want to.  That said both her performances mainly made me want to hear the originals again and reinforced my thought that no matter how I love the idea of Steven Tyler strapped onto a rocket into orbit I could never do that because he wrote Dream On which I’ve loved from the first time I heard it in 1974 or whenever it was.  Deb busted out her deep and sometimes hidden The Voice trivia by blurting out when Koryn said she was singing Dream On “DON’T DO THAT! You can’t do that better than Amanda Brown did!!!”

And then there is Joshua.  I understood the idea of him having a backing band for the first song but then he just stood there not interacting like the Loneliest Lead Singer ever.  I was starting to get annoyed again right off the bat with the Beatles choice for the second song but ended up liking it so much more than I thought I would because as a (finally) happily married person I find joy in seeing other people who seem to be happily married, even if his wife is actually a monster for suggesting that Sting song last week.

I believe there is only one scenario where Hummingbird Lightfoot does not come away with the TSAVFL trophy, and Debbie Eaglesong is the only team with the chance to catch him.  Second should be either Debbie Eaglesong or Sizzle & Fizzle and it’s a dogfight for third because then you have to throw in Fluffy Koalababy, Barry and the Ladies and Karaoke SongBookWorms as all having a chance!  Luckily last weekend was the real Walla Walla Whoopemup so Tim and I were able to commiserate about our destroyed dreams over a ton of alcohol which seems a fitting way to wrap up this week.

P.S.  I just saw that Gina’s blackboard saved India.  While dismayed at the outcome I am seriously impressed with the power of that blackboard.

Spoiler!

America is a stupid butthead.

Forgot my notes at home.  We'll chat later.
